The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently announced that approximately 5 percent of participants in the meaningful use program will be audited before or after receiving their incentive payments. Modern Healthcare reports that the CMS has hired a contractor to conduct “desk audits” to remotely review information from EHR software. There may also be a few live audits held within medical practices. Data security is a primary focus for future audits. Robert Anthony, deputy director of the HIT Initiatives Group at CMS, believes that healthcare providers can improve their security protocols to ensure that pertinent information isn’t accessible to anyone other than authorized personnel.
