Nuesoft Technologies Offers Workplace Violence Tips for Medical Practices

New Podcast Reviews Warning Signs, Types of Violence and Tips for Prevention

ATLANTA (Oct. 6, 2010) – A new podcast from Nuesoft Technologies addresses the frequency of workplace violence in healthcare settings, and discusses ways that medical practices can minimize risk in their facilities.

“Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that healthcare workers are more than four times likely than professionals in other work settings to be victims of violence, and more recent statistics show that they may be as much as 10 times more likely,” said Eugene Rugala, a former profiler/supervisory special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) Critical Incident Response Group (CIRG), who now works with Fortune 500 companies to help them design and implement workplace violence prevention programs. Rugala is Nuesoft’s featured speaker in October’s medical practice management podcast, “Preventing Workplace Violence in Healthcare Settings.”

Rugala cites the hours that healthcare providers work, the fact that they are regularly dealing with patients and family members who are under stress, and the accessibility by the public of most medical clinics/hospitals as some of the reasons that healthcare workers are more at risk for on-the-job violence.

While non-fatal injuries resulting from workplace violence are very common in healthcare (nearly half of all workplace injuries recorded by BLS in 2000 occurred in healthcare environments), most workplace violence incidents in healthcare facilities do not involve homicides – a statistic that is consistent with data across all workplaces, according to Rugala:

“Homicides on the job are the tip of the iceberg when it comes to workplace violence,” he said. “They happen, but are infrequent events. There are instead a whole host of other behaviors that constitute workplace violence, including bullying, stalking, threats, sexual assaults, domestic violence that spills into the workplace, harassment in all its forms, and physical altercations. These behaviors are much more commonplace, and they often go unreported in healthcare environments and all other types of workplaces.”
